Youth Sailing 2021
Optimist Race Team: KYC is home to a growing fleet of Optimists under the leadership of former Olympian and multi-award winning coach Tine Moberg-Parker.
The Optimist, a very stable small boat with a single sail, is the perfect single-handed boat for children age 6-15 to learn to sail, increase their self-confidence, physical literacy and develop strong racing skills that will carry them on to other KYC fleets as they age out of the Optimist.
Laser Race Team: Once your child has outgrown the Opti, they can move on to a Laser. This is perfect for the person who prefers to sail solo and be in charge of their own success or failure.
Since the design was first released in 1970, well over a quarter million Laser dinghies have been sold, and they remain incredibly popular on English Bay! Finesse your skills in starts, mark rounding, boat handling, tuning and hiking, and overall seamanship. No need to coordinate schedules with crew, just get out and race!
420 Race Team: Sailed Optis and looking for your next challenge? Do you prefer to hang out with a friend or sibling? You can sail with a partner on a Club 420!
This is the ultimate teamwork machine! You and your partner will learn to master transferable techniques to sail faster and better, including racing rules, strategy, tactics, and reading the weather. 420 also offers the opportunity to learn how to use a spinnaker, as well as a trapeze. If regattas are permitted this year, then there will be opportunity to compete on English Bay.
